Florence Swainson Industrial Training Centre for the deaf run by the Church of South India - Tirunelveli Diocese, is a unique institution in the entire state of Tamil Nadu in India. Since 1972, it has been rendering yeoman services to the socially downtrodden hearing impaired from Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Aims
and Objectives
1. To provide Industrial Training to the hearing impaired on completion of their
academic education and make them full-fledged craftsmen.
2. To prepare them to face the modern scientific advancements with adequate
knowledge and courage.
3. To provide opportunity for their all-round development and encourage them
to integrate themselves with the society.
4. To help them to become fruitful citizens of the country with a improved socio-economic
condition.
| 1. Electronic Mechanic: It is a two-year course recognized by the Government of India (National Council for Vocational Training). Both boys and girls are admitted in August of every year on successful completion of Tenth Standard. Basic Electronics, Theory of Propagation, Theory of Electricity & Magnetism, Circuit Reading, Assembling of Electronic Circuit and Repairing are taught | |||
| apart from repairing of Radio, Television, Tape recorder and other Electrical and Electronic house-hold articles such as Mixer-grinder, Iron Box etc. Government of India's Certificate is issued to the trainees an successful completion of their training. | |||
| 2. Automobile Mechanic: It is a two-year course recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Boys are admitted in this course in July each year. Repair and maintenance of all kinds of two-wheelers and general workshop practices such as Fitting, Filing, Grinding and Drilling etc. are taught. Maintenance of 4-wheelers by water-servicing, grease packing is also taught. Government of Tami Nadu Certificate is issued on successful completion of this training. | |||
| 3. Tailoring (Boys): It is two-year course recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Boys who have passed at least Eighth Standard are admitted to this course in July each year. Cutting and stitching of all kinds of garments for men, a few garments for ladies and minor repair works on the sewing machine are taught. of this training. Features of the Training: All the courses are conducted by well qualified Instructors in a very systematic way. The class rooms are well furnished and the workshops are fully equipped for each trade. A well-stocked library is available for the use of the trainees. Regular evening games are conducted . Proper medical care is given to the trainees. Placement Service: The trainees are helped to find suitable jobs both in the Public and Private sectors on completion of their training. If the place of job is far-away from their home-town they are helped to find suitable accommodation and other arrangements necessary for their stay. They are periodically visited in their work--spots to break the language barrier expected to emerge between the deaf and other employees or the employers and help them if they are in need of anything. If the trainees are interested in self-employment they are helped to get financial assistance from the Nationalised Banks or from the Voluntary Organizations. Other Services of this Centre: This Centre renders free counseling to any hearing impaired to select suitable hearing aids. They are helped in the fitment of these aids. All types of hearing tads are repaired at a nominal charge. Custom Ear-moulds are made at this Centre. All kinds of Electrical and Electronic gadgets and house hold articles are repaired. All kinds of wooden furniture for home and all types of Church furniture such as Pulpits, Alter Tables, Choir benches and Lecterns are fabricated with carved designs. All types of heavy/light vehicles and two wheelers are cleaned and grease-packed. Future Plans: Plans include introduction of Computer Training at this Centre to enhance the job opportunity for the hearing impaired, introduction four-wheeler maintenance in the Course of Automobile Mechanic and to increase the production wooden articles to provide job opportunities to the trainees of this Centre. To implement these plans the Centre needs financial. Therefore well-wishers are requested to extend help to this Centre.
